Snowfall in the forest, cold winter weather scene, snow covered trees landscape.

You may be surprised to learn that St. Louis, Missouri is a great place to visit in the winter. Although this city gets extremely cold and receives a significant amount of snow during the winter, it is still an excellent choice as a winter destination.

Top Wintertime Attractions

  1. Steinberg Park—If you enjoy being outdoors in the winter and love to ice skate, you can visit the legendary Steinberg Park. Since the 1950s, this park has been the “go-to” place for skating and then relaxing around the fire.
  1. Sasha’s on the Shaw—For a unique dining experience, this is the place to go. In addition to an incredible menu, there are campfires roaring on the patios during the cold months.
  1. Tilles Park—During the winter, acre upon acre is transformed with holiday lights into a magical winter wonderland that is simply beautiful.
  1. Art Hill—For sledding, Art Hill, located in Forest Park, is the best place in St. Louis. You can spend an entire day having fun on a sled or toboggan.
  1. Polar Bear Plunge—If you are brave at heart and want to do something that benefits the Special Olympics, participate in one of two Polar Bear Plunges at Maryland Heights and Lake Saint Louis. However, if you’re not interested in jumping into frigid water, you can always lend support to a great cause by watching.
  1. Schlafly Winter ESB—For delicious, ice-cold beer, head to Schlafy for the Extra Special Bitter (ESB) beer-drinking event. Although this popular pub offers specials for various holidays and seasons, people say ESB is the best.
  1. Loop Ice Carnival—In January, when temperatures are the lowest and the air coldest, you can participate in the Loop Ice Carnival, to make ice sculptures or get involved with snowball fights and enjoying the delicious s’mores.
  1. Climatron at Missouri Botanical Garden—To get out of the cold, head to the south side of the city for the Climatron, and walk among tropical plants, palm trees, and even cascading waterfalls.
  1. Louis Symphony at Powell Hall—If you want to get into the holiday season, there is no better way than visiting Powell Hall for symphonic music. Take an elegant night on the town, dress to the nines, and listen to beautiful music.
  1. Louis Zoo—Even in the winter, the St. Louis Zoo is a popular venue—especially Penguin Parade, where live penguins waddle along the pathways.
