Many of us make new goals for the coming year but only a few of us actually manage to achieve or keep our new year’s resolutions. This largely means that willpower is just sometimes not enough to keep things going. So, how are you going to make this year’s resolutions any better? Read on to find out how you can.
Get an Accountable Source
No man (or woman) is an island. We will always do better if we’re accountable to someone. That person can be a family member, partner, friend or even your colleague. Whichever the case, you need someone to watch your back and to provide support and encouragement when things get rough. If you have a fitness goal, you might want to think about activities that you can do with a partner. In this way, you won’t get easily bored or demotivated and you can also do more activities when there’s more than one person involved.
Write It All Down
Don’t just have a plan in your head. Although that’s a very good first step, you still need a form of physical evidence to refer back to. These days, there are plenty of apps that you can use to track your resolutions and goals, but if you’re not into that, you can still pen down your goals to put in a location you often access. This way, we’re provided with a reminder to stick to the path and it also gives us a concrete visual to achieving our goals.
Decide on Time Frames
One of the worst things you can do is to make a general resolution and not give yourself a time frame to achieve it. For example, you can tell yourself to lose 20 pounds this year. If you don’t break your goal down into smaller frames, you’re going to have a much harder time sticking to your resolutions. In other words, it’s a lot easier to have milestones that you achieve bit by bit rather than just having a non-committal decision to lose weight.
Expect Some Problems
You’re bound to run into some difficulty with any goal you set. It may just be a small hiccup at times, but it’s always better to maintain the idea that failure is an option. The most important thing to remember at this time is that there is nothing wrong with falling short or backsliding, but we should also not give up and continue to push forward. When we set realistic expectations for ourselves, we’re more prepared for things to go wrong, and we’re also more prepared to handle it better.
Reward Yourself
Like with anything else that can go wrong, we can also feel demotivated at times. One way to keep ourselves on track is to provide ourselves with a form of positive encouragement with each milestone met. This can be a food treat, an outing, or even just a day to chill out and do what you like. Just be careful not to go overboard and reward yourself for every single action you take as that has the possibility of backfiring.
