If you need a great place where to spend an afternoon, evening or weekend, look no further than the Missouri wineries. You can choose from the nearly 100 within the state or the dozens located in the vicinity of St. Louis.

Not only are the local wineries among the nation’s oldest, but a few of them also count themselves among the most award-winning. And even those that don’t win medals at global competitions mustn’t be overlooked as they still offer hospitality, great views or simple fun, making them a must-visit destination. Below we will present you six beautiful wineries, all within a short drive of St. Louis. While some are famous for their wine, others are for their views, and some for both:

  1. Montelle Winery – Augusta, Missouri

Montelle Winery can best be described as a hilltop retreat that also happens to make good wine. Because the winery is located atop the Osage ridge,  it offers one of the region’s best views of the Missouri river valley. For the visitors who want to get comfortable and settle in, the winery offers terraces with plenty of picnic tables and a multi-level patio. Although in 2008 the winery won the  Missouri Governor’s Cup (best overall wine) for its Dry Vignoles and most certainly won other medals over the years as well, Montelle is not exactly famous for its wines. So, while most visitors will really enjoy the fine wine,  what they will probably appreciate and remember best about Montelle will be its atmosphere.

  1. Sugar Creek Winery & Vineyards – Defiance, Missouri

If you want to enjoy a perfect experience, then you simply must visit the Sugar Creek Winery. It is located on a lofty river bluff rising from the Katy Trail, right in the heart of Missouri Wine Country. Beautiful vineyards surround this family owned business, situated in a turn-of-the-century Victorian home. Award-winning estate bottled wines are created entirely on location using Missouri grapes. Sugar Creek is minutes away down the road from the Inn and can be accessed from the Katy Trail.

Pavilions and covered decks overlooking the Missouri river valley provide indoor and outdoor seating while beautiful rooms with cozy fireplaces welcome guests throughout the year. You can enjoy wine tasting daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sugar Creek also offers sausages, assorted cheeses and snacks to guests but they are also welcomed to bring their own picnics should they choose to.

  1. Balducci’s – Augusta, Missouri

Augusta is Missouri’s newest winery, owned by Rick and Carol Balducci.  Here you can find world-class wine and food combined with beautiful scenic vistas and sophisticated sounds. Whether you need a place for a special event, a corporate outing, a weekend destination or just a day trip, this location is perfect as it offers a family atmosphere and the full service and amenities of this state-of-the-art facility.

Louis P. Balducci, who was a wine pioneer in the wholesale wine business in Missouri from 1946 – 1979, introduced Missourians to many new types and brands of wines from the U.S. and around the world. He came to be a highly respected wine specialist in St. Louis, his reputation as a wine educator and speaker growing to include Missouri and the entire Midwest.

  1. Augusta Winery – Augusta, Missouri

Tony Kooyumjian founded the Augusta Winery in 1988. The winery is located in the scenic town of Augusta, Missouri, on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River Valley. Due to its historical significance, unique soil, climate, and the quality of wines produced from grapes grown in vineyards as late as the 1800’s, Augusta was recognized in 1980 as the first U.S. Wine District.

The award-winning wines of Augusta Winery can be enjoyed together with locally produced sausage and cheese either in the Wine & Beer Garden or on the outdoor wine terrace. The garden has special features such as free live weekend entertainment from May to October, craft beers, a spectacular 10-foot grape arbor and a peaceful fountain. In the tasting room of the Augusta Winery you will also find a gift shop, gift certificates, custom labeled wine,  and gift baskets made to order.

  1. Cedar Lake Cellars – Wright City, Missouri

This unique winery and event venue in located at the heart of Warren County, Missouri and is surrounded by two lakes and over one hundred and seventy picturesque acres. Schreckengast Farm was bought by Carl Bolm who, in 2002, started  to restore the 1930s buildings because he believed that it would become one of St. Louis’ premiere event locations.

The charming Big Red Barn and comforting ambiance of the surrounding acreage are the things that make Cedar Lake so popular. By adding a winery to the list, this destination becomes ideal for lunch or dinner in the country as well as private events or large corporate gatherings. Finding itself close enough to create a special day yet far enough to get away is what makes Cedar Lake a perfect example of the cosmopolitan country at its finest. Here you will find a meticulously maintained facility that is professionally run, meaning that the guests will most certainly enjoy their stay and be left wanting to come back for more.

  1. Hermannhof Winery – Hermann, Missouri

Another crown jewel of Missouri’s wine industry is the Hermannhof winery, famous for its beautiful courtyard which feels more like a Munich beer garden than a winery. This should come as no surprise considering that Hermannhof opened as a brewery and a winery in 1852. So make sure to tour the winery’s historic cellars and to sample its homemade German sausages and cheeses before grabbing a spot in the courtyard. When it comes to the wine, you can rest assured knowing that not only is it as good as any Missouri produced wine, but it’s also a regular winner of prestigious international competitions (Hermannhof is the only winery to win the Brown Forman Trophy twice).
