The types of food that you consume prior to flying will have an effect on the travel experience. However, it is just as important to avoid eating certain foods before taking to the skies. Especially for long flights or if you tend to feel uncomfortable being on a plane, consuming and avoiding certain foods is important.  This week’s travel tips break down what foods to avoid and what you should have when traveling.

Foods to Eat

  • Oranges – As imagined, airports and airplanes are notorious for germs. To give your immune system a much-needed boost, vitamin C is essential. Although you could take supplements, oranges provide the body with protection in the form of vitamin C while being delicious and hydrating.
  • Yogurt – You should also eat yogurt that contains natural probiotics before flying. This will aid with digestion and provide your body with protection against stomach bugs.
  • Lean Proteins – Whether in the form of grilled chicken, fish, or nuts, lean protein is another excellent food to consume prior to flying. These foods do not overload the body with fats that are hard to digest, and they help boost energy.
  • Smoothies – Fruit smoothies are excellent before flying. In addition to staying hydrated, smoothies made only with fresh fruit, yogurt, and ice are delicious, filling, and loaded with nutrients.

Foods to Avoid

  • French Fries – Although a staple food at most airports, avoid french fries at all cost. At high altitudes, the body is unable to digest high-sodium/high-fat foods properly. As a result, you feel uncomfortable, bloated, and gassy. French fries will also make you feel lethargic.
  • Apples – Although some fruits are actually beneficial prior to flying, you want to stay away from apples. Because this fruit is fibrous and hard to digest, there is a good chance of developing bloating and gas.
  • Hot Peppers – Airports typically have restaurants with menu items that include hot peppers. However, before boarding a plane, this is something to avoid. Due to being spicy, you could develop stomach discomfort that leads to belching and gas.
  • Cruciferous Vegetables – You also want to avoid cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli and cauliflower. With increasing altitudes, you will likely experience bloating, gas, and discomfort.

After Landing

Following your flight, you should consider using a limousine service to reach your next destination. In addition to being a cost-effective mode of ground transportation, limos are convenient and safe. Of course, a chauffeured vehicle also saves time, which is always beneficial.
