The sun is out and the birds are chirping. It’s time for another summer in St. Louis. Any native the city knows that summer is one of the best times to be here.
Events and festivals of all kinds take place this time of year. Although the heat and the humidity can get a little overbearing, you still don’t want to miss the fabulous opportunities to have fun in the sun.
Here are some of the best ways to heat up your summer.
BROADWAY SHOWS
Summer in St. Louis would not be complete without The Muny. The nation’s largest outdoor theatre is one of the biggest summer theatre attractions in the country. Some of the best shows of Broadway make a trip to St. Louis for the summer to preform on The Muny stage.
The best thing about The Muny, besides it being right in your backyard, is that the tickets are incredibly reasonable. You can get fantastic seats for little cost. If you get there early enough, you can even sit in the nosebleeds for free. With the low prices, there is no excuse to miss out on one of St. Louis’ greatest cultural staples.
This year, The Muny has a fabulous season lined up, including shows like Billy Elliot The Musical, Porgy and Bess, Grease, Hello Dolly!, and more.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Summer would also be incomplete without a big Fourth of July blow out.
Fair St. Louis is one of the nation’s largest Fourth of July celebrations, and it lasts all weekend. You can head downtown in the afternoon to catch the big concerts and see the airshow put on every year.
Once the sun goes down, you and your family can sit back and enjoy the huge fireworks display over the St. Louis arch.
TASTE OF ST. LOUIS
Fair St. Louis is not the only big annual fair in St. Louis during the summer. Another local favorite is Taste of St. Louis.
Every year this festival draws in some of the best restaurants and food trucks in the area. Each place sets up a booth for passers by to stop at and sample some of their best treats. This year, Taste of St. Louis will be located just outside the city in Chesterfield City. Look for more information on the festival when it comes around this summer in September.
ST. LOUIS ART FAIR
Another favorite annual festival is the St. Louis Art Fair. This huge fair draws in some fabulous artists from all over the area. You can simply walk up and down the streets taking in the art on display in various booths, or you can purchase some art from many of the very talented contributors. The art fair also sets up booths for food, music, and art stations for children and adults alike. The St. Louis Art Fair will once again be located in Clayton and take place the first weekend of September.
FREE (AND CHEAP) FUN
The great thing about summer in the city is that you don’t need to attend a festival to have a good time. There are plenty of fun summer activities open all summer long, many of which are completely free.
For example, you can take your family to St. Louis’ top rated free zoo.
Other places to check out are the beautiful Missouri Botanical Gardens and City Garden. City Garden is a wonderful little park located in the heart of downtown St. Louis full of huge sculptures and fountains that your children are allowed and encouraged to climb on and splash around in. Hopping around through the fountains in City Garden is a perfect way to beat that St. Louis heat.
