You may not naturally associate the city of St. Louis with wine. After all, it’s not exactly in the middle of Napa Valley. However, you might be surprised to learn that due to the warm weather and rich soil in Missouri and Illinois, the area is actually very conducive to the growth and cultivation of wine grapes.
As result, small wineries have been popping up all over central Missouri and southern Illinois. Many of these fantastic vineyards and wineries are located very near the city. When you think of wine, you might think of France. With France’s long and storied history of wine production, its no wonder that Ste. Genevieve is home to one of the best wineries in the area. Ste. Genevieve, Missouri is a small historical community located an hour south of St. Louis. The town known for its deep French roots and French culture that has been passed down through the generations from the towns very early settlers.
Chaumette Vineyards and Winery is located in Ste. Genevieve and in addition to a delicious section of wines, they also offer a spa and wedding and other event accommodations. Take your special someone to Chaumette Vineyards in a stretch or a sedan and after taking a tour of this charming historical town and learning about the rich history of the area, you can spend the rest of your day sipping wine and getting pampered.
Grafton, Illinois is also home to some wonderful wineries. Like Ste. Genevieve, Grafton is yet another small historical town found just an hour outside of the big city. However, Grafton is famous not for its ethnic culture, but rather for its stunning location. The drive to Grafton alone is worth the trip.

Grafton is home to a handful of wineries including Grafton Winery and Aeries Riverview Winery. Aeries is found at the top of the bluff and is famous for its stunning view of the river. There is no experience quite like taking in the sunset on the Aerie porch while sipping a delicious glass of wine.
The Grafton Winery or the Aeries Riverview Winery would be awesome places to grab some friends, rent a bus and make a weekend of it.
If you do not have the time to take an entire day or weekend trip to Grafton or Ste. Genevieve, you will be happy to learn that there are also some fantastic wineries even closer to home. The suburb of St. Charles, for example, is home to Little Hills Winery. It’s wine selection, wonderful restaurant, and short drive makes it a wonderful place to spend a relaxing evening with friends.
